1. The Bridge Project

005.Memorial Bridge - Portsmouth

Memorial Bridge is a steel through-truss lift bridge that carries U.S. Route 1 from Portsmouth New Hampshire to Kittery, Maine, crossing the Piscataqua River not far from where it dumps into the Atlantic. Two fixed Warren trusses flank a center Warren Truss that is lifted every half-hour during the summer to allow river boat traffic through. The bridge was built between 1920 and 1923 and may soon be replaced or rehabilitated.

  • I printed and framed this photo for my sister Rebeccah for Christmas. That year, I selected a different bridge for all of my immediate family members. As a student of astronomy, this night shot seemed to be a good fit.
