Sunset Cruise 2008

Each year, SGM plans and hosts a 3-hour "sunset cruise" to the Isles of Shoals. That's the plan, anyway. When the weather is a factor, we usually go up the Piscataqua River. This year, with a fast-moving storm that reached us just as we were boarding, we took a new route and hugged along the Atlantic shore. It was nice to see the backside of the Wentworth by the Sea hotel, and by the time we arrived, the rain had stopped and the sunset was great. The marina there is home to some rather nice yachts. The cruise was held on Sunday, July 27, 2008, from 6 - 9:30 p.m.

  • A rainy start. At this point it doesn't look like we'll get much of a sunset. But thankfully, 216 men decided to chance it and got rewarded. We got a new route, we got a rainbow, and the post-sunset sky was just great.

  • The wide angle lens captures all of the Sheraton but keeps us from knowing whether treasurer Phil is smiling. My guess is that he is, as he has $900 in dockside ticket sales in his pocket.

  • Much to my surprise, we're approaching Memorial Bridge. Are we going to the isles after all? Answer: No. We're going to the Wentworth by the Sea!

  • Every year, someone on the boat is surprised to see this, expecting a more typical drawbridge instead. Most people don't see this bridge in this position.

  • Nothing inspires romance like a little sunlight, eh? It won't stay out for long, but that hole in the sky will give us some nice color later. All in all, it was another sunset cruise that lived up to its name.

  • The Wentworth by the Sea is just off to the right. I wouldn't be surprised if the cheapest boat in this marina cost more than I've yet made in my lifetime.

  • This is one of my favorite "action" photos. I'm using the rear-curtain flash to freeze some of the action, but using a long shutter to capture the motion. This was my daily photo for July 27.

  • Sam won the grand prize. This must have seemed fitting, as the poor guy arrived in a topless Jeep in the pouring rain. He was still pretty wet at the end of the night. James is trying to escape the wide angle lens at left. I love capturing him this way.
