Starbucked Society.

My friend Dennis tells me not to be afraid to channel Edward Hopper in my photography. This was the first time that I was deliberately thinking about it as I shot this scene. My lens choice is too wide to bring the eye to what’s happening inside the window, but I could not help myself in my desire to also capture the light and color of downtown Portsmouth at dusk, and of course, that lovely sky.

Pandemic.

I’m slowly catching up with my Joy of Photography class, submitting my week 2 photos this morning and finally getting the final shot needed for week 3 tonight. The missing piece in that assignment was a panned shot. I got two or three decent pans tonight after shooting for a half hour in Portsmouth’s Market Square, which made a decent background for panning. I submitted a separate shot of a motorcycle for the class.

Whenever I set out to pan, I almost always notice a perfect car or bike while enroute to my spot. Tonight was no exception; as I entered the square a red Mini Cooper drove by. Drat!

Dusk Launderette.

It’s Monday and I’m in Portsmouth enjoying the late evening dusk. I was compelled to return to this location with the ultra-wide lens and find a better angle than the one I captured before. I think I got the amount of evening ambient light just right. Now all I need is a little action. Someone in that chair with a book, and/or someone standing over one of these machines. And a little steam on the windows would help too.

Remarkably, I never noticed that pair of underwear sitting there.

Connected.

Tonight I was in Portsmouth as usual on a Monday but I was on assignment this time: I pledged to get my friend George reconnected to his wireless. He switched from a DSL connection to cable and *POOF*, his wireless router stopped working. The router merely needed to be reconfigured for cable. Once I had done that, we tested it to be sure it was working; here he’s already logged into Netflix adjusting his preferences, happy as can be! He let me know that my next assignment will be bringing over the right cable so that his streaming Netflix movies can be watched on the larger TV in this room. I probably could have done this tonight but each time I visit him, it’s good dinner and hearty laughs all night. The connection can wait!

This was shot using ambient light. The light sources are the warm incandescent bulb behind George and the cool blue light coming from the LCD screen. Blue light is not flattering for portraits (neither is an ultra wide angle lens!) so I used the Channel Mixer to desaturate the color. This method of desaturation offers control over each of the color channels. Here, I want the blue light on George’s face to be bright, so I gave most of the emphasis to the blue channel.

Here’s the original from the camera if you’d like to see this shot in not-so-great color. The greenish warmth in the room is due to the camera’s auto white balance correcting for the blue LCD light. The room can be easily corrected in Photoshop, but it makes the light striking George much bluer. Black and white to the rescue!

Social Networker.

I spent a very pleasant evening with my friend George today. Between the main course and dessert, he noted that he was ready to move beyond “Craig’s List” and into the world of specific social networking. All he needed were some photos for his profile. “You know, a few shots of me in my black turtleneck.” Then he waited for me to notice that he was already wearing his black turtleneck, so I ran off to grab the camera gear. Luckily, I had everything one needs to take 20 profile shots: camera, flash, tripod, white ceiling, and an empty room with recently refinished floors. Meanwhile, George had just the right props to construct the attitude he wants to convey.

The remaining shots include George’s head. But I like how the prop changes the attitude of this shot without the benefit of a particular facial expression.

I think the white balance on this shot is correct. The walls are actually a very faint shade of green.

Spring Interrupted.

Today New Hampshire was blanketed with a few inches of wet snow. The temperature hovered right near freezing all day, with no wind, so finding trees like this one was easy. This tree lives just outside South Church in Portsmouth where I spend most Mondays. The two spotlights are turned on with motion sensors but they only stay on for a few seconds, so I had to stay in front of the sensor and dance behind the camera to keep them on.

Night Church.

As I walked up to South Church in Portsmouth tonight for my usual Monday evening social group, I liked how this lamp was lit by the mercury vapor coming down from the ceiling. So I shot multiple angles, focal lengths, and heights and liked this shot best. Again I have the ISO cranked in order to hand hold this night-time shot, but granite is inherently noisy so I didn’t think I’d mind. I don’t.

Sodium vapor light is crashing the party from the left side, casting a faint bit of orange on the granite wall and floor. Since I’m only working with ambient light, the only way to fix this is to go black and white. But I liked the orange building and I didn’t want to mess with layers. I need sleep.

I can hardly wait to work with dusk-filled sky again in the evenings. Each day the sun sets a little bit later. I’m not in any hurry for the bugs, but I do plan to enjoy the extra light.

Spotlight Jasper.

Tonight my Portsmouth friends played a home-made version of the game “Catch Phrase.” It was very campy good time as we guessed deliberately wrong words. Here my friend Jasper is in the “lightning round” trying to get people to guess a most difficult word. I don’t even remember it now; I think it was one of the phobias, but not the one where people fear peanut butter getting stuck on the roof of their mouths. Luckily I don’t have that one.

In this shot you can see the conflicting colors of light on the floor. The right side is lit by fluorescent bulbs while the left side is lit by incandescent floodlamps. Sometimes you have to just roll with life’s punches.

I am packing up to head to Waverly tomorrow. I may not have any internet for the next few days. But I will have my camera and will catch up when I return.

Stonewall Portsmouth.

Tonight I was in Portsmouth, strolling around downtown well past dusk with my D700 and no tripod, pushing the ISO envelope. I cranked it up to ISO 3200 for a while tonight, and got a few good shots.

This is the façade of the Stonewall Kitchen store. There was enough light here that I used ISO 1600. I prefer this grayscale version, but click here to see it in color (includes all post processing except the channel mixer step). Although it was below freezing tonight, it was much warmer than it has been in recent days and it felt rather pleasant.
