My friend Dennis tells me not to be afraid to channel Edward Hopper in my photography. This was the first time that I was deliberately thinking about it as I shot this scene. My lens choice is too wide to bring the eye to what’s happening inside the window, but I could not help myself in my desire to also capture the light and color of downtown Portsmouth at dusk, and of course, that lovely sky.

Jeremy > September 11, 2008; Day 132.

My daily training rides ended today, so I treated myself to a little take out. I don’t always dine at McDs but this building is very new and I was delighted to find it nestled in front of the dusky sky with no power lines in sight.

It’s just as well that I won’t be riding NH 106 anymore. The RVs were arriving by the hundreds tonight; I wouldn’t be surprised if there are thousands arriving tomorrow and Saturday. It’s NASCAR weekend at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway and tent cities are sprouting up all along the road. I’ve never actually attended the race but it has been interesting to observe the accretion of people this week.

Hopefully I will have one final long ride on Sunday. Then the bike goes to the shop to tighten everything that came loose during this break-in period. Overall I am very happy with this bike and I’d like to think that I am ready for the ride.

Guardian Angel.

My mid-week training rides begin and end at this cemetery. I have tried to make a daily photo here for the past few weeks, but cemeteries can be dreary without good light. Here in September, the natural light is dim enough at the end of the ride that the flash can now be the key light. I am standing just out of frame to the right holding the flash; you can tell where it is by the bit of flare along the top edge. A small snoot on the flash would have taken care of that.

I did reach 20 miles per hour tonight, a surprise since it felt like I was going slower.

Autumn’s Emergence.

I enjoyed a brief stroll through a church garden today. Although it is still August, the colors of Autumn are just starting to appear. (This reminds me that it is urgent that I capture “summer” at the log bridge this weekend!)

I would have enjoyed this garden longer but the mosquitoes started dive bombing me. I don't know how you green thumbs cope with the bugs. Spray? Netting? Anyway, in addition to the vegetables, there are several flowers growing in this garden. The caretaker of the building saw me photographing and told me that if I came back during the day and waited patiently, I could catch the birds picking at the flowers. I don’t know if I’ll have time this weekend but that might be fun to capture.

No training ride tonight; I'm resting for tomorrow’s 71-mile repeat.

Small-sky country. I was more efficient with my training ride today, so I got home ahead of the sunset. I immediately grabbed the camera and started shooting the sky from my backyard. This shot shows pretty much the extent of what I can see. A lot more exists between the trees and the horizon that I don't see. This could be why my rhubarb plants remain runts…the sun vanishes from my yard long before it actually sets.

A few minutes after this shot was taken, the layers of clouds began to turn red one by one. My favorite was the last layer, the cirrus clouds. But the shot is a little dark; I’m underexposing so that I can continue to hand hold.

No post processing; JPEG from camera.
Jeremy > August 7, 2008; Day 97.

For the next couple of weeks, my departure from the gym will coincide with dusk. I will be scurrying around finding subjects under random and hopefully ideal skies.

Tonight I didn’t scurry far, because lately I have been dreaming of doing a George Fillmore-style series at my gym. I don’t mean stealing his dreamy post processing style; I merely want to learn how to capture people the way he does. My gym is a 24-hour symphony of picturesque moments: muscle failure, exhaustion, sweat, encouragement, laughter, boredom, endorphin highs, body sculpture, stretching, and mirrors. All body types, all ages, all colors are there. And although the lighting is mercury vapor, it’s bright and even.

There’s just one problem. I’m too much of a chicken to walk around inside there with my D80. I need to figure out a way to overcome this fear. Even this shot, taken outside with the worst imaginable interior view, was nerve wracking.

Portsmouth has been churning out some nice Monday evening skies lately. I had a choice between this rainbow and this pre-sunset sky, both happening at the same time. Rainbows are so fleeting that I have to act quickly and sometimes forget some compositional rules, like the dullness of taking shots, standing, with the camera at eye-level. A bit more Photoshop tweaking than normal seems to have saved the day.

Jeremy > July 18, 2008. Day 77.

This is the Centennial Inn in Concord. I’ve eaten at the restaurant here before but didn’t notice until last week how well lit the building is at night. With storms expected tonight, I set up in the lawn and hoped that the rain would come after dusk. I got my wish and a little bonus: a faint bit of lightning, which added purple to the sky.

The only thing that bothers me about this shot is the deep shadow cast by the balcony. If you visit the hotel’s website, you’ll notice that the problem was present for their photographer too, but he or she had the advantage that all the interior lights were on. But hey...I got lightning!

I may return here and set up between the turrets...might be something worth capturing there, and the shadow can be mostly pushed out of frame.

Jeremy > June 26, 2008; Day 55.

Tomorrow is the Summer Solstice, Stage 3: Latest Sunset. I would have preferred to have taken this shot then, but I will be busy all through dusk. Pity.

This is taken from Manchester’s new pedestrian bridge, the Hands Across the Merrimack (already featured as a photo of the day). The highway is I-293. I lament that the city strung up electrical wires on this side of the bridge.

I love the photo opportunities available at this bridge. If you can forgive the big glob of flare, I took a not bad self-portrait tonight, too.
