Jeremy  > Photo Diary > My 40th Year
This gallery is a complete chronicle of my 40th year, starting on my birthday in 2008. I posted one photo each day for a year. The photo-a-day project continues in this gallery here.

Tomorrow is the Summer Solstice, Stage 3: Latest Sunset. I would have preferred to have taken this shot then, but I will be busy all through dusk. Pity.

This is taken from Manchester’s new pedestrian bridge, the Hands Across the Merrimack (already featured as a photo of the day). The highway is I-293. I lament that the city strung up electrical wires on this side of the bridge.

I love the photo opportunities available at this bridge. If you can forgive the big glob of flare, I took a not bad self-portrait tonight, too.

Sometimes nature is kind. I awoke early this morning hoping that Concord would be bathed in fog. It didn’t look promising at first but a little patience (and a lot of humidity) paid off. I captured this building in all stages of fogginess and got to pick and choose the amount of fog I wanted. How sweet is that? The building appears to be a little chapel within the city cemetery, but there’s no parking lot and there’s never any activity.

This was originally captured in color and converted to sepia using Photoshop’s color balance. Then I applied the Orton technique to give it some glow.

I also applied the Orton technique to the color version; I like this too.

Raw: Saturation: +25
PS: Unsharp Mask: 20-30-0
PS: Desaturate, then Color Balance: +50 Cyan to Red, -50 Yellow to Blue (muted sepia)
PS: Apply Image: Screen (to overexpose)
PS: Duplicate, then apply Gaussian Blur (40 pixel radius) to the duplicate
PS: Move duplicate back to original, blend the layers (Multiply), and flatten the image

I attended a classic car show today in Tilton, NH. I am slowly weaving my way into a new circle of car-nut friends. These guys really know how to throw a barbecue afterwards. They are starting to drop hints that I should consider joining them for real by getting my own car. I resist due to lack of time, land, and interest. I mostly want to learn to photograph these girls well. But it does make me wonder…if I were to get a classic car, would I go and find one, or would one find me?

This is one of several hundred pictures taken today. Cars are notoriously easy to photograph badly. I like this one because of the way its owner is dressed. I also like it because I'm not in it!

I also took a number of instrument cluster shots that I really liked. Here, here, and here, for example. I will be posting the best shots from the show in a separate gallery.

After a day of nearly 400 shots, which I am still sorting out, I decided to relax today and keep it simple. Tonight’s dessert was a slice of homemade rhubarb pie. Peter bought the rhubarb at a local farmer’s market; I already had the tapioca. The season is almost over, so I’m enjoying it while it lasts.

This shot is not cookbook-ready. A reflector would have reduced the distracting shadows at left without too much texture loss. A fork wouldn't hurt either. And good heavens, why didn’t I leave the fallen blob of whipped cream on the plate where it fell? I’ve noticed that most of my problems come from not paying attention in my viewfinder...better work on that.

Jeremy > June 30, 2008; Day 59.

Tonight I joined my friends at the Portsmouth Bowl-o-Rama (whose sign is so photogenic you can’t mess it up) for a few strings of candlepin.

This is my friend Ozzie contemplating the skinny little pins. They sure look far away when viewed through a fisheye lens.

I was raised in Indiana so I never experienced candlepin bowling until after college. I must say, as a guy who has his own 16-pound ball and who actually scored above 200 once in tenpin, I don’t much care for the little balls. I also don’t like the rule whereby if the ball goes in the gutter and yet manages to knock down pins, they don’t count. Nevertheless, I was thrilled to score a 62 tonight. (I only played one string…the rest of the evening was spent swapping lenses and filling up a 2GB card!)

Jeremy > July 1, 2008; Day 60.

Just before I wrapped up another work day today, Oliver peeked out the window and warned me that it might be a good night for stormy skies. I’m glad he said this; I kept my eye on the sky all evening. As I drove home from the gym, I could see the photographer’s dream sky taking shape – a thick band of clouds, above a thin band of clear sky, above the western horizon. I dashed home to collect the camera and then ran downtown.

To my delight, a band was playing on the state house lawn and a crowd had gathered. I had about 20 minutes of glorious orange sky to work with. Unfortunately, the dynamic range was too great to get a good crowd shot with good sky, but that’s where HDR comes in so handy, no?

Peter and I were invited to a Strawberry Soiree tonight in Candia, NH. The evening was simple, elegant, and delicious. I have managed to weave my way into a lovely circle of friends. This was the décor for the evening. Out of frame to the right are a plate of biscuits, a bowl of sliced strawberries, and bowl of fresh whipped cream.

And to think, I could have spent the evening exercising instead!

I had great plans for tonight: either practice shooting fireworks in Manchester, or capture the first of my "4 Holidays" project. As you can see, mother nature had other plans tonight. Despite this, it appears that Manchester held their fireworks anyway, which is too bad because their rain date was Saturday, which would have given me a day to scout for a good location.

I took this shot with my pocket camera, a Casio EX-V8. This camera is always with me for those times when the D80 is too cumbersome.

The D80 wasn’t silent all day; I did use it to take some shots of a very sweet gift from a friend. OK, a very tart gift, but it will be sweet when I’m done with it!

Jeremy > July 4, 2008; Day 63.

Today was a photography-rich day. Peter and I explored the very nice town of Woodstock, VT, and I had fun capturing the textures of the streets. We’ll definitely be going back for more.

Tonight was a great night for fireworks in Concord. Although the show overall was not so great, it made for great practice. I followed most of the rules: manual mode, bulb shutter, f/8, tripod. I broke only one: no wired remote shutter. This added some wobble but I don’t mind so much. This shot was taken with my 300mm f/2.8 lens, which has only come out of its case twice since I bought it. The 300mm is actually 450mm on a 1.5 sensor, so many of the 120 shots I took were disastrously out of frame. But I kept clicking, and got a handful of shots I liked.

For the first time, I had both cameras at this shoot. The D70 captured the scene at 18mm to show how far away I was from the fireworks, and how poor a wide fireworks shot would be at this location. (I didn’t realize that the end of the 300mm lens was in the frame!)

Tomorrow, I may have a chance to practice some more.
