Jeremy > April 28, 2009; Day 361. Ice out. Today I had sufficient time and strength to do a job that comes around twice each year…swap the tires on my car. It’s sad that a regular chore is a highlight but there I am. Today the General Arctic snow tires were pulled and replaced by the General Exclaim performance tires. The ride should be noticeably quieter and firmer tomorrow. I was happy to see that I had more than a half-inch of tread left on the snows which should get me through another winter. After that, I’ll probably be ready to replace the car. Since this indeed was the highlight of my day, I naturally had the camera on hand to take a few shots. If anyone thinks that I’m actually making an adjustment to this metal thing, great. The camera lies. I’m actually trying to keep my shutter finger clean, but I’m happy that there’s a little dirt on my arm. This is late evening mostly-shaded sunlight. The camera is in aperture priority and is trying to balance the black tire well against the very bright sky, and did a fairly even split. I’m correcting for the shadows in post processing, allowing the highlights to remain blown. The car is lost against the sky, but I'd rather you were looking at it's underbelly anyway. I’m also finally trying the “copper” action from Thom Hogan’s D700 set. Here’s the original image in color. Jeremy > April 29, 2009; Day 362. Domain. To shoot for this week’s photography class, I shifted my living room lights around. After I took the shots for the class, I noticed that the light was falling on these little pups in a pleasing way. Good thing; the shots for the class were shots of the front of my house which has been a daily subject many times. I returned to the gym tonight for a light workout. It was the first since I became ill last week. Normally exercise suppresses my cough but tonight it was actually worse instead. Not sure why. But it was nice to do something. Jeremy > April 30, 2009; Day 363. Sidelit Moon. I almost thought that I’d get through the year without a good moon shot, but here it is. I used to be the guy who loved chasing the full moon, but now I’m into sidelighting. Much better texture. Though I'll bet that the full moon would still make a very nice moonrise. This is as much zoom as I can currently muster. I’m using my 300mm lens mounted on the D80. (The 10.2MP DX sensor produces more pixels than the D700’s FX sensor does in DX mode.) Between the lens and camera is the TC17E teleconverter (providing a 1.7 additional factor). With this, I’m squeezing about 765mm out of my 300mm lens. Jeremy > May 1, 2009; Day 364. Pawns of a Feather. Today I spent a little time catching up in my Joy of Photography class. The week 5 assignment is due on Sunday; I have not yet submitted anything beyond week 1. How easily I can fall behind if I’m not careful. Week 2 covered the aperture priority mode. In this shot, I’m using my 70-210mm lens with all 3 extension tubes mounted. I’m using the lens zoom to focus. Out here at 180mm, the maximum aperture is about f/5. However, with the extension tubes, the lens starts to behave like a macro lens and depth of field gets very thin. Here I’m at f/16, and it’s obvious that I'm isolating a single pawn. These pieces are facing a north window, so there’s plenty of diffuse white light coming in. There is no monochrome conversion here; these are pewter pieces shot in front of white foam board. The camera is a bit too low to make out the kneeling position in which these pieces are posed. I was deliberately trying to avoid the board, but I think the pose may help this shot and will likely experiment some more. Week 3 is all about motion. I hope to work on those throughout the remainder of the weekend. Jeremy > May 2, 2009; Day 365. Full Circle. Peter and I enjoyed an evening at the home of our friend Charles tonight. On his picnic table was this little dinosaur. I’m not sure I’d want to be able to see the rest of my body so easily. Charles is an amazing cook…the menu was all Bourbon Street, New Orleans fare. I haven’t had jambalaya that good since I was at the New Orleans School of Cooking (just a 1-day class). This shot ends the first year of my photo diary project. Tomorrow I turn 41. I contemplated taking a break, but since I’m planning to attend an intense photo workshop in Patagonia in about 19 months from now, I’ve decided to keep on practicing. Thanks to the many friends and family who have been with me for the ride this year. My daily photo project continues in this new gallery here. Peter and I enjoyed an evening at the home of our friend Charles tonight. On his picnic table was this little dinosaur. I’m not sure I’d want to be able to see the rest of my body so easily.

Charles is an amazing cook…the menu was all Bourbon Street, New Orleans fare. I haven’t had jambalaya that good since I was at the New Orleans School of Cooking (just a 1-day class).

This shot ends the first year of my photo diary project. Tomorrow I turn 41. I contemplated taking a break, but since I’m planning to attend an intense photo workshop in Patagonia in about 19 months from now, I’ve decided to keep on practicing. Thanks to the many friends and family who have been with me for the ride this year.
